Japanese researchers are trying to prove that it will be possible to create underwater cities by the year 2030. The conceptual Ocean Spirals would descend by up to 2.5 miles below the ocean’s surface.
The underwater community would include up to 5,000 people with all necessary accommodation and offices. The entire city and community would be self- sustaining, whereas the upper watertight floating dome could move to different levels in the ocean depending on the weather.
What is interesting is that the components of the structure would be created using 3D printers. This does not mean it would be any cheaper to build. It is estimated it will cost around 16 billion Pounds!
Some new applied technologies would include hydraulic pressure to produce desalinated drinking water or new ways of fuelling power generators. As innovative as it sounds, it is not clear how the main natural light problem will be solved. Dark areas might cause deficiency of vitamin D. Another issue is the price. Critics question it claiming that at such costs much more can be done in adapting present wasteland. This would be a much better use of funds rather than building and maintaining very expensive underwater structures.
