For some people Battersea Power Station is a symbol of British industry.For the younger generation this is a neglected area that could be transformed into a new vibrant quarter. For many years this was abandoned by consultants and developers, until a consortium of Malaysian investors rescued the site by financing the regeneration of deserted chimneys and engine rooms into luxury penthouse apartments.
Close cooperation between Gehry’s and Foster helped to create a unique design plan that shows high quality and modern design solutions. It will be the first project done by Gehry in London who has very high design aspirations. Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “Many thought it would never happen, but today is a triumphant moment in Battersea Power Station’s rebirth as well as a glowing testimony to London’s attractiveness for global investors. He also ensured that once this development will be fully completed it is due to boast 3,500 new homes, shops, cafes, restaurants and offices. Architect Frank Gehry said he thought the new development would be a hub that would attract people “from all over the world.”
‘Our goal from the start has been to create a neighborhood that connects into the historic fabric of the city of London, but one that has its own identity and integrity. We have tried to create humanistic environments that feel good to live in and visit’, explained Frank Gehry.
The new development plan will include a design of a new high street that will be called Electric Boulevard. It will be built exactly where the former industrial land is situated. Grant Brooker, who is a design director and senior partner at Foster+Partners, agreed that it is an inspiring regeneration project that will transform the area and create a new district for south London. It will make people proud.
However, some sceptics claim that the new complex itself looks very different then the factory in the past and does not really blend in with the rest of the area. Another question arising is whether the prices of the new houses and commercial buildings will be at all affordable ? We are about to find that out in the near future.
