The highly anticipated 150m tall window frame designed by Dutch architect firm, Donis, is set for completion in 2014.
The full glass structure will contain a museum and a roof top cafe which will provide spectacular panoramic views of the city of Dubai.
The idea of the project is for the structure to frame the new, built up Dubai if looking through one way and the traditional, old Dubai the other.
The concept model of the tower had won the Thyssen Krupp Elevator International Architecture Award in 2009.
The project is expected to cost in excess of £21 million and attract over 2 million visitors annually.
