London’s old warehouses transformation

Many news headlines show availability of properties in London skyscraper and new residential areas. But what about transforming old places and creating unique living spaces?

This kind of project would not suit everyone,  as it requires a substantial investment not mentioning additional expenses for workforce or an architect.  However,  for individualists who seek more space and do not want to possess just a “regular” apartment, it might appear to be a cheaper option to start with.

The pattern of buying old buildings and transforming them into unique pieces of art is not new. It was a well-known trend in New York in the 1950s and 1960s. Since then – motivation of buying a project of this scope is the same – lower costs. However, it requires a significant investment to make such a dream come true.

Not surprisingly, the demand has increased for this particular type of buildings, especially during recession – just before the market slowly picked up on prices.  In the 1990s London created residential properties in old sugar and cocoa warehouses in the Docklands.  It does not surprise anyone that both: an old laundry and school have been transformed into luxurious apartments.

The new improved living spaces attract many European buyers. They look for buildings that are unique and have distinctive features.  On the other hand people from different cultures have their own favourite features and habits that appeal to them.  In some countries such as Russia, people get used to buying  ‘raw apartments’ and then are happy to adapt them to their needs.  It would be very costly to buy a new apartment and completely redesign it.
