Voters in Paris last night selected Dubai to host the World Expo trade convention in 2020.
After an extensive campaign over the past two years, Dubai has emerged victorious against rival cities Sao Paulo, Izmir, and Yekaterinburg to host the six month event.
The World Expo is hosted every five years and showcases the latest in architecture and technology. This will be the first time is has been held in the Middle East, and the 2015 expo will be held in Milan.
The authorities in Dubai estimate that the expo will bring in approx. $23bn to the economy and have set aside $8.4bn to fund it, including huge infrastructure projects and a massive exhibition centre.
An impressive display of fireworks were launched from the Burj Khalifa to celebrate the win in Dubai last night.
Congratulations to everyone involved, Expo 2020 looks set to be one to remember if Dubai’s well-known exuberance has anything to do with it.
