Algae-powered building

The world’s first algae-powered building has been unveiled in Hamburg, Germany, by engineering firm Arup.

The algae will be grown on the exterior of the building in glass louvres.

The algae are continuously supplied with liquid nutrients and carbon dioxide via a water circuit running through the facade.

When they are ready to be harvested they are transferred as a thick pulp to the technical room inside the building and fermented in a biogas plant.

Not only providing renewable energy for the building the algae will also grow quickly in sunlight to provide shade in the summer for it’s occupants.
